On the same day that a seventy-one-year-old Georgia woman died from the West Nile Virus, the prediction by state officials that it would arrive soon in New Hampshire has come true. Public health officials say the virus has been found in two dead crows - in Salem and Rollinsford. Those birds were the first out of 400 others to test positive so far this year. West Nile - which is transmitted by mosquitoes - can infect people - but those occurances are relatively low. People who do get the virus typically experience mild flu-like symptoms or - in some cases - no symptoms at all.The elderly and young are most at risk for serious complications from West Nile.

In the wake of a close encounter yesterday, New Hampshire Fish and Game officials are reminding people to be careful when dealing with black bears. Two tourists were scratched by one of the animals yesterday at the Flume in Lincoln. While their injuries were minor, authorities urge people to keep food, birdfeeders, and trash away from places that could attract bears ---- and to exercise caution if they encounter one.
